Work, socializing, and study are not defined by geographical borders, and all of us find ourselves in regular situations where communication can span cultures simultaneously.

Despite technology and the internet making the process of communication easier, any experienced professional will know that it is not necessarily better. English may be the world's language, but those for whom it is not their mother tongue will understand the complexity, and frankly disadvantage, that not being able to engage with the same fluency as others can pose.

It is not enough to have a good technical grasp of English as your second language anymore. Communication is built on so much more. Nuance, dialect, tonality, and intonation (to name just a few factors) all influence meaning and understanding, and utilizing those differences can be the difference between building great relationships and a rudimentary understanding.

Imagine a doctor who can explain a serious illness but can't connect with a patient on an emotional level, or a businessperson who doesn't understand the nuances of a negotiation.

That's where I come in. Using tried and tested techniques, I teach my students the building blocks of authentic verbal communication in English, ensuring they feel confident in their own abilities whatever their situation.

"Hi, I’m Liam O’Brien, a New York-based (but London-born) CELTA-certified ESL teacher with a passion for helping students in their ESL journey.

Prior to teaching communication skills, my career in singing took me across the globe. I've been fantastically lucky to meet the most amazing people from around the world and that period of my life introduced me to an extraordinary mix of individuals, who all communicated through their own artistic means.

Having met my wife during that time, we moved to New York and I set up Communicate with Confidence. Using the foundations of my voice technique and my professional English Second Language CELTA certification, I now have the privilege of sharing my knowledge with my international network of students, whose confidence in using their own voice has grown in intention and energy.

We understand that speaking a new language can be intimidating, but with an experienced and compassionate instructor and proven teaching methods, you’ll feel comfortable speaking with confidence in no time."
